Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.
These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure is not a direct service provider.
“Road to Recovery” taxi voucher program will be made available in Bexar County to women diagnosed with breast cancer in need of transportation for treatment, screening or diagnostic appointments. Komen funding also will provide breast prosthesis and bras for low-income women.
CTRC provides treatment for under- and uninsured women with breast cancer who have household incomes up to 300 percent ($30,630) of the federal poverty level. Treatment includes chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, imaging for treatment assessment, minor surgical procedures and supportive care.
CentroMed provides education, screening, diagnostic and case management services for the prevention and detection of breast cancer on the south side of San Antonio for low-income, uninsured women.
CommuniCare provides clinical breast exams, screening mammograms and diagnostic breast treatment for low-income, under- or uninsured women on San Antonio’s east and west side.
Habla Con Tu Hermana is a community health education program offered to medically under-served Latinas living in San Antonio’s west, northeast and south sides. This culturally sensitive project promotes breast health education and screening through a peer-to-peer promotora network.
Entre Mujeres/Between Women Project (Promotoras) - provides education, outreach and support services to under-served, low-income, minority women in the east and southeast sides of San Antonio. The goal of this project is to increase women’s awareness of breast cancer and the number of women accessing available breast health services.
SLEW provides emotional and physical support for underinsured and low-income women who are recovering from and/or undergoing breast cancer surgery, chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Services include mental health, nutritional, physical and massage therapy, lymphatic drainage therapy and nursing services. Services are available to breast cancer patients throughout Bexar County.
UHS, in partnership with Metropolitan Health District, will assist low-income, uninsured, at-risk women with clinical breast exams, screening mammography and advanced diagnostic procedures in downtown, southwest, southeast and north side clinics in San Antonio.
WINGS provides no-cost patient navigator services and comprehensive treatment for uninsured women diagnosed with breast cancer or recurring breast cancer that have no other options for care.
